Information to prepare

You may request a consultation before deciding between gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Note when symptoms began, the exact screening finding and any previous endoscopy. Bring the complete report rather than only a cropped image of the flagged result.

Medical conditions, surgery, allergies and medication can change how an examination is prepared and performed. Do not stop antithrombotic or other prescribed medication on your own. Bring the medication name and dose for review.

How colonoscopy and gastroscopy preparation differ

Three points to confirm before leaving

Food, drink and transport

Confirm when food and drink can restart and how to travel home if sedation was used. Do not drive a car, motorcycle or bicycle on a day when sedative medication was used.

Activity after a procedure

Tissue sampling or polyp treatment can change restrictions on food, alcohol, exercise, business travel and holidays. Keep the written instructions.

Results and follow-up

Confirm whether pathology was requested, when to receive that result and whether another examination, clinic visit or referral is required.
