Constipation consultation is covered by health insurance

Constipation, difficulty passing stool, a feeling of incomplete evacuation, hard stool and bloating can be discussed during an insured gastroenterology visit. General outpatient visits do not require an appointment; visit during clinic hours.

Concerns you can discuss

• Bowel movements have become less frequent or several days pass without one
• Stool is hard or requires excessive straining
• A feeling that stool remains after a bowel movement
• Bloating, abdominal fullness or abdominal pain
• Long-term use of constipation medicine or stimulant laxatives
• Alternating constipation and diarrhea, or a sudden change in bowel habits

What the consultation reviews

The clinic asks when the change began, stool form, food and fluid intake, activity, menstrual and daily routines, medical conditions, abdominal surgery and current medication. Bring the names and doses of constipation medicines you have used if available.

Approach to treatment

Treatment is not limited to lifestyle advice. The type, dose and use of medication are reviewed according to the stool pattern and medical background. Follow-up considers both bowel movements and abdominal symptoms before treatment is continued or changed.

When testing may be considered

Blood tests, abdominal ultrasound or colonoscopy may be considered for a sudden change in bowel habits, blood in stool, anemia, weight loss, severe abdominal pain or an abnormal screening result. Constipation does not automatically mean that colonoscopy is required; the need is decided after clinical assessment.

When a self-pay service may be discussed

If a test or treatment outside health insurance is considered medically appropriate, the clinic explains the service, cost and separation from insured care during the consultation. Patients do not choose between insured and self-pay care for the same treatment.
