You can discuss seasonal hay fever and year-round allergic rhinitis during a general outpatient visit. General consultations do not require an appointment; visit during clinic hours.

Symptoms you can discuss

• Repeated sneezing or a watery runny nose
• Nasal congestion or difficulty breathing through the nose
• Itchy or watery eyes and throat discomfort
• Symptoms that return during a particular season
• Symptoms that continue throughout the year around dust or other triggers
• Sleep, work or concentration affected by symptoms

What the doctor reviews

The consultation covers when and where symptoms occur, possible triggers, eye or throat symptoms, other allergic conditions, previous diagnoses and medication already tried. This helps distinguish allergic rhinitis from other possible causes of nasal symptoms.

How the care plan is decided

The doctor reviews the history and current symptoms, then explains appropriate medication, testing or follow-up. If detailed examination of the nose or specialist treatment is needed, referral to an ear, nose and throat service will be considered.

What to bring

• Health insurance card or eligibility document
• A list of oral medication, nasal sprays, eye drops and non-prescription products
• Previous allergy test results or treatment records, if available
• Notes about the season, place or situation in which symptoms worsen
• Patients under 18 must attend with a parent or guardian
